GRAND GULLS SOAR TO VICTORY

Chelsea clinched its second MPNFL division one premiership in four years when it thrashed Edithvale-Aspendale in Sunday’s grand final at Kars St.
The Seagulls, sparked by centreman Graham Stewart and on-ballers like Andrew Sinclair and Mark Giggins seized the initiative mid-way through the first term and despite some stern opposition, refused to hand it back. Ritchie’s first term was exceptional as he bagged four goals and forced the Eagles to move reliable full-back Moulton away from him and into attack.

Eagles rover Mick Bartholomew fought a brave battle against the Seagull’s running fleet, Shane Atkins thwarted many Chelsea attacks and Martello tried hard at both ends of the ground, but overall the Dales had few winners.

Special mention must go to Chelsea’s back-line. Dave Ritchie, Eldridge, Close and Park are not household names in the MPNFL but they did their jobs brilliantly on Sunday.Such was the Seagull’s dominance late in the game that Aitcheson, the side’s best full forward this season, played the last term at full back supporting a very dour defence.

Graham Stewart was awarded the VCFL medal in recognition of a best afield performance. Time and time again the veteran created opportunities out of the centre, combining expertly with fellow small man Willie Duff and ruckman Robbie Knowles.

Chelsea ruck-rover David Peart could undergo plastic surgery after receiving a knee to the face early in the second term.

Tarpey, when asked when he would stop celebrating bubbled “I’ve got two weeks holiday so that will give me plenty of time to recover - I’ll need it !”
