R.I.P.

The Chris Bull Story extracted from "Chelsea Grit" a History of The Chelsea Football Club.

After starting his career at Chelsea with the Juniors, Chris played his 1st Senior Game in 1978 and played for 4 seasons before leaving at the end of 1981. In 1987 Chris returned as Senior Captain/Coach and had immediate success Coaching the Team to a Senior Premiership that season. He Coached The Club for 3 Seasons, 1987, 1988 and 1989 and during that time at centre-half-back, he was the self-appointed protector of his team. Always there when things sparked up, he would transform from his normal gentlemanly nature into a man who was capable of throwing his weight around.  He knew the right blokes to hit and just when it needed to be done.

A confidence building leader who allowed his players the freedom to play some exciting free-flowing football, Chris insisted that his players view the team and each other as of paramount importance. To that end he encouraged and even demanded at times that they mix socially and develop strong bonds of friendship that would prevail in the heat of action.

His players were an inspiration to each other as they became unified with only one goal in mind. In short, he developed a team in his own image—the players would, and did, play for each other with outstanding results.
