THE LONG HAUL MAN
A connoisseur of fine wine and a lover of all things associated with the Fire Brigade, Michael extended his community service to include the demanding task of managing Chelsea Football Club’s finances for an amazing 16 years.
This was a job well within Michael’s capabilities, and one which he did with precision and due diligence for many years prior including the heady days of the late eighties and early nineties.
It was during this time that Chelsea experienced a period of sustained high achievement. But gold has never been cheap, and despite Michael’s protestations, the club went on a spending spree over several years to ensure that the Seagulls maintained their ascendancy in the competition.
The outstanding performances continued for an unprecedented nine years, with the Seagulls remaining serious contenders throughout. But Chelsea were running an annual deficit of about $10,000 at this stage and accountability for expenditure was lacking.
Major raffles were required to square the ledger each year prior to the season starting, but this didn’t hide the fact that there were problems in the various financial operations that needed attention.
Michael transferred his energies to the position of Treasurer of the RSL in 1996, having provided Chelsea Football Club with outstanding service over an extended period.
He is currently still an active and loyal Life Member.
