THE COMMANDO
A former member of Kennedy’s commandos at Hawthorn, Graham Cooper was an intense task master. Immediately on arrival he directed the hardest pre-season ever experienced at the club. Experience at Hawthorn had shown these methods to be successful.
Tough but fair, ’Coops’ was respected for his honesty and was very popular with the players who developed an appreciation for his ‘theme’ approach to each match.
Coop’s solitary game for the club was at Sorrento when the team was short. Playing full-forward, his tactics of continually putting his opponent into a head lock were confusing, but as he explained later “it was to stop him from running off me.”
Always keen and active around the club, ‘Coops’ became disillusioned with management’s failure to recruit effectively and resigned to assist his wife with a business venture at the conclusion of the 1975 season.
