Recruited from Frankston in 1986 following Chelsea’s soul destroying loss in the previous year’s Grand Final, Gerry must have questioned his decision when only three players attended the first training session.
Seemingly about to embark on a rebuilding phase, Gerry did have a nice group of youngsters to work with. Many of his players were about to make their names in football.
On their first outing the young Gulls were seven goals in arrears at the orange break but proved to themselves equal to the task as they stormed home to beat the Doggies by a point.
It became very clear that these kids could play as they set about winning fourteen games on the trot.

Gerry was blessed with this unexpected pool of talent and he was able to implement a game plan that his team adopted with enthusiasm as the year unfolded.
The coach himself was a nuggety and determined backman who demanded that his players follow his lead and attain maximum fitness. He was a ‘do as I do’ coach who would start a training session with “follow me” and then start running into the street—for five or six kilometres at pace. No-one could catch him. His approach included writing personal notes and promoting a non-smoking, non-drinking lifestyle; one that he himself embraced. Gerry’s methods, whilst innovative, were resoundingly successful as he led the club to its first premiership in 18 years.

Job done and much to the club’s disappointment, Gerry set out to pursue other experiences in life. Tragically he was killed in a small plane crash a few years later.
