William 'Bill' Robinson was the first paid Coach at Chelsea being appointed to the position in 1948 and then again in 1949.
A former P. E. instructor in the RAAF, Bill Robinson knew a bit about fitness and football and he was happy to impart his knowledge to his young charges during his two year stay at the club. Playing at centre-half-forward, he was, at 6’2” and very mobile, a good target for players downfield.
Leading a group of young enthusiasts, Bill encouraged his troops to try new things as they developed. The more difficult to master skills of drop kicking and stab passes were pursued with support from the coach who was patient in the knowledge that the only way to improve was through persistence.
