Chelsea FNC President announces withdrawal from MPNFL 2020 Football Season

11 June 2020
Dear Members,

I am writing to you to advise that after much consultation with our Board, Players and numerous members, The Chelsea Football Netball club have decided to withdraw the football department from the 2020 MPNFL season. This includes the seniors, reserves and under 19 teams, but does not include at this point the netball teams. Netball runs to separate timeframes and may be able to commence later in the year than football, but the same safety criteria will be applied to determine a season start.

Since my last communication to you it has become evident that we cannot guarantee a safe environment for players to play football or for our members to come to the games to support, if games were to get going without risking infection from the COVID19 virus. Simply put you cannot plan for risks you cannot see or predict.

I have notified the MPNFL COO Shaun Connell of the club’s position today. The league were planning to make decisions after June 22 but based on feedback from our players and members, the Chelsea Board felt in the interests of the health and wellbeing of all people involved in our club, that we make our position known today to the league.

Yesterday we conducted a survey of football players with 66% of the players concerned about their health and wellbeing and 70% of players supporting a cancellation of the season and regroup for the preseason in Oct/Nov in preparation for season 2021.

Once we are in a position to reopen the club in accordance with government and local council guidelines we will put together some social events ensuring the Chelsea community can reengage with our great football club, although it will be different for the remainder of this year.

Chelsea Football Netball club has a proud history being a part of the local community for over 110 years. Season 2020 was going to be a great year for the club with outstanding recruitment along with laser sharp commitment from our historical playing group, our resolve for success will only become greater as we begin to plan for season 2021.

I would like to personally thank all of our sponsors and partners who are doing it tough right now, for their ongoing support and as a community we need to get behind them and ensure they get through the challenges faced from the COVID19 lockdown.

On Behalf of the Chelsea Football Netball club Board I would like to thank you for your continued support, it has been a humbling experience leading such an amazing group of people with so much passion and commitment to making the hard decisions in a time of so much uncertainty.

Look forward to seeing you all at the club soon.
